Dynamite Hack - Boy-N-The Hood

Released: 2000
Download It (4.5Mb)

One of the standout tracks from "Take a Bite Outta Rhyme: A Rock Tribute to Rap".

Dynamite Hack take Eazy-E and Ice Cube's slice of NWA ghetto life and turn it into a delicate folk song, complete with soft vocals and lilting acoustic-play.

Fucken classic.

Ghostface Killah channels the lyrical content of Fiddy and wants to push push push in Missy's bush bush bush.

Ayumi Hamasaki - Humming 7/4

Released: 2004
Download It (7.3Mb)

Japanese pop number with a bit of crunch.

So-so intro, kind of heavy for pop but still blandish.

This thankfully gives way to a great hook that pogoes along. I think shes singing in english for the chorus, but in the end it doesn't really matter.

Coldplay - Square One

After seeing this song on Jools Holland, it is painfully obvious that Chris Martin needs to shape up his vocal chops. Because if it wasn’t for the fact that he sings like a fucking pussy, this would be an OK song.

Sing with some fucking balls for fucks sakes.

The Mountain Goats - Hast Thou Considered The Tetrapod

Delegated Review (Delegated by Dylan)
Released: 2005
Download It (4Mb)

Voice reminds me of Paul Mcdermott's, but less annoying. Or maybe even an actual goat. Eccentric title that doesn't offend me. Acoustic based, the doom doom drums give it a feeling of building up all the way through. What can I say? It didn't give me wood, but it didn't make me want jam knitting needles into my ears either.

Most critics were bewildered and disappointed by the genre-shifting New Danger, but I liked all of it. Including this track.

However, what on earth was Mos doing playing Ford Prefect in the (atrocious) Hitchhikers Movie?

OK, so you've listened to Godspeed and Mogwai and so on, and thought 'Meh, I like the idea, and some of it's quite good but a lot is a load of shite', well Explosions in the Sky are the answer to all your problems.

Explosions eschew any of the studio trickery used by Mogwai or the pretentious dirge of Godspeed, and instead create something beautiful, unique and heartfelt with nothing more than 2 guitars, a bass and a drumkit.

You'll put this track on and then focus on something else, then you'll find yourself tapping your feet along, and before you know it, you're wrapped up in a lovely hook.

A lovely sunny, cloudy piece of slowburning pop from new york. I knew shoe-gazer was coming back.

Close your eyes, turn up the volume and try to wonder why the phone isn't ringing.

Plastikman - Hypokondriak

Delegated Review (Gareth)
Released: 1998
Download It (13Mb)(Not Recommended)

I really tried to get into this track, I hate being pigeonholed or backed into a corner, so when someone comes along and says "this'll really get to you" or "you'll really hate / love this" I immediately try to open my mind so that I don't automatically just agree with whatever they said I would do.

But gareth was right. This track is just fucked. 2 minutes into it I slipped into a sort of fugue state much like when I had attempted to watch 2001 : A Space Odyssey all the way through. I came to half an hour later staring at a photo of a pig.

BBC Radio - Adolf Hitler Is Dead - Newsflash 01/05/1945

Soundbyte Review
Year of Origin: 1945
Download It (0.1MB)

Rarity from ww2 for you all.

Here it is, after 6 years of engagement in the biggest war ever know to mankind, the first on-air announcement to the residents of Blighty that the one-testicled kraut has carked it.

Actually, it's fascinating to observe the restraint of the announcer. This was 60 years ago - and back then people working for bbc radio had to enunciate everything in received pronunciation, ie the "queens english".

The effect it has on the modern-day listener is extremely jarring - it sounds like the most important announcement of the century is being delivered with all the gusto of a weather report.

Two world wars and one world cup, doo da, doo da.

Blonde Redhead - I Don't Want U

Track Review
Released: 1995
Download It (4.7 Mb)
Buy It (Amazon)

Before they became big sheilas, Blonde Readhead were purveyors of passable no-wave type guff.

Fronted by to hachi-machi japanese girls, the song starts off in a low key seventies cop show type groove avec young gentleman screaming that he doesn't want u. I presume this is the same U that has left Kelly Clarkson. Sorry.

Then it transforms into quite a pretty open chord Sonic Youth-aping strum fest with one of the aforementioned hachi-machi girls singing about something.

It's worth a listen anyway.

Eels - The Other Shoe

Track Review
Released: 2005
Download It (3.3 Mb)
Buy It (Amazon)

It's hard to pick out a stand out track on Mr E's opus Blinking Lights And Other Revelations, but this one kinda, well stood out.

The song is based on a little chugging accoustic riff and then turn it into a spaghetti western epic, resplendent with wailing, timpanies and strings.

It's nice when groups accomplish something that could have quite easily be a pretentious load of shit.
