M.I.A. - Galang

Track Review
Released: 2004
Download It (4.9MB)

M.I.A. (real name Maya Arul, from Sri Lanka by way of London) is the new Dizzee Rascal.

Yeah, every year needs an over-hyped overrated musically-bankrupt media hoax.

Look, all you interweb hipster sheep, you fell for it, didn't you study Goebbels in your Communications 101 course for your crappy worthless degree?

OK, so now that Rolling Stone and MTV have discovered her, you can pretend to stop liking this atonal, worthless, unengaging dull garbage.

Twits.

Or are you holding out for the sycophantic, patronising articles written in broadsheets by middle-aged men proclaiming her to be the latest "voice" of urban Britain, cue 5/5, cue Brit Awards, cue shagging Robbie Williams, before you decide she's not cool anymore?

It's good to know that now "London's calling" again (thanks for the archly-ironic rip-off lyric, M.I.A.) and all it has to say in 2005 is "ga lang a lang ga lang lang ga ga"

3/10

  • a) Her name is not Maya Arul it is Maya Arulpragasam - but I guess those darky names are difficult to pronounce. Either that or they're difficult to research.

    b) It seems it is you who is the slave to the hype and musical fashion more than anyone else. By reacting so harshly against someone on the fact she is the latest underground it girl, you are essentially declaring how cool you are. You - and nobody else - understand the system so well that you alone have the foresight to preempt her inevitable mainstream popularity rise (and subsequent underground popularity decline) before everybody else.

Wow what an insight - how many times did you have to read Pitchfork Review to figure that all out?

If you weren't that concerned with your own image, you'd realise that the song is just catchy with a neat syncopated beat.

Oh well, while we all enjoy the brief period that MIA's music is so cool and edgy, you can go on hoping and praying that Monaco release another album.

  • re a) You're being pedantic, her name is quoted in countless publications as the abbreviated Arul, just as much if not more so than the elongated form. I can't believe you launched your critique of my review with this worthless trainspotting observation.

re b) Basically, I just don't like the song. But I decided to concentrate on lambasting the hype aspect cause it was bugging me (and also it made a more entertaining review/debate). Looks like I hit a nerve - so you were suckered into buying her album, huh?

PS - Monaco did release another album. But I guess those foreign-sounding band names are difficult to pronounce. Either that or they're difficult to research.

  • i just saw the clip for this song on the rolling stone site.

now, is this the bitch from baghdad or what? she's got more a more complex system of puns than double speak!

bombs and speakers = drum and bass? is that the formula?

under what ground did she crawl from wearing bad t-shirts and tracky tops?

one line synopsis: london calling does chaka khan in a purple haze.

    i am left with questions...
